The PoorTraits Series

To produce PoorTraits, Rafael conceptualizes each painting, then steps behind the glass to paint it from the back. Looking through a piece that will be viewed from the other side, Rafael must paint backwards, applying the highlights first.		         



                                          



Painted on window glass with silica based lead paint then fused at 1500F, these portraits and their customized frames evoke a visual passion for the sometimes puzzling, mostly amusing, and almost always humbling, human spirit.
